Railride's Crossing> Table of Content> Department of Anthromedia> Comics
They're comics. They're on the Web. Yet I'm not calling this a web-comic. You probably shouldn't either.
Whyzzat? I don't presently have sufficient ideas to sustain a typical comic on any predictable schedule, so you would do well to expect me to squeeze out a one-shot every now and then. Think of it as an exercise in sequential art that gives you an idea how these characters think. Perhaps someday this could mushroom into enough material for a regular strip, but for now, just appreciate it for what it does offer--more 'art' to look at.
The Gang Gets Discovered by Fandom, or "What, Me
Furry?"
My characters pre-date my knowledge of the fandom known as "furry"
by about a decade. So it follows that the revelation that they might be a
part of it would come as something as a surprise. Here, I speculate on how
this development might play out.
This 'comic' plays on the convenient coincidence that my characters pre-date
my knowledge of the fandom, and have so far not acknowledged it's existence
(they are written as if they are self-aware). With the completion of this
comic, I can make good on plans to have them appear on one of the fandom's
online galleries.
[Content advisory: contains
profanities]
Installment 1: [5 pages] First inkling we're
not alone
Installment 2: [7 pages] Talking in one's
sleep
Installment 3: [9 pages] A meeting, more info,
and a new character joins the group
Installment 4: [19 pages] Some culture shock,
some swearing, an argument, and a resolution
3/08/03: Installment Four, in progress since May 2002 (digital shading since September 2002), has finally been completed and posted. While the digital shading attempts to get better as it progresses (I was learning as I went), it came at the expense of the file sizes of each page as compared to the first three installments. Expect page sizes from 93K to 260K with most pages in the vicinity of 130K. I tried hard, but you can only push the .GIF format so far, and JPG could not preserve the linework without files 2-3 tiimes the size. Maybe PNG will work better, but I need to get a newer version of Ulead SmartSaver that supports it. Considering the original artwork was 2552x3300 resolution and 24 megabytes per page (24-bit files were necessary to perform the shading used) it's still a drastic reduction.
4/16/2005: By the way, this comic continues in irregularly-scheduled installments on my VCL gallery.
School Uniform Follies (one-shot)
One of the reasons behind instituting uniforms in public schools was
to curb 'fashion competition' between students. It didn't take long for someone
(well, at least the girls) to figure out how to do this anyway. And just
in case you were wondering, yes, I have asked people who've attended Catholic
school and they verify that this did indeed go on.
